PFS Passive Fire Solutions Inc. was incorporated in 2026 to do one thing well: give building owners, design teams, contractors and authorities an independent, defensible record of the passive fire protection in a building — and then help keep that record true through the building's life.

The founder

Corey Beckett, Founder & Principal, spent close to twenty years on the installing side of the firestop industry before founding PFS — estimating, project management, tested-system selection, judgement review, quality assurance and closeout, most recently as a firestop division manager and the Designated Responsible Individual for a UL Qualified Firestop Contractor program. He has passed the UL Firestop Exam, one of the examinations IAS AC291 lists as a qualification for inspectors of fire-resistant penetration and joint systems.

He is active in the Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA) — in its committees, and in code development and specification development for the industry — and is a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. linkedin.com/in/coreybeckett08

How PFS is organised

PFS operates on the ISO/IEC 17020 Type A independence model. It has no ownership, employment or financial interest in any firestop installer, manufacturer or supplier, does not design, specify, install, repair or maintain firestop systems, and does not inspect any structure it has advised on. Every enquiry is screened for conflicts of interest before a proposal is issued, and risks to impartiality are identified, analysed and recorded on an ongoing basis.

The quality system is documented against the IAS AC291 Accreditation Criteria for Special Inspection Agencies — an ISO/IEC 17020 scheme — with the intention of applying for accreditation. Until that accreditation is formally granted, PFS performs standard-based technical field verification and is not an accredited Special Inspection Agency. That boundary appears on every document PFS issues.

Standards

• CAN/ULC-S115, Standard Method of Fire Tests of Firestop Systems — the fire test standard the National Building Code of Canada requires fire stops to be tested to, and the standard the systems PFS inspects are listed to. It covers penetration firestop systems, joint firestop systems and perimeter joint firestop systems.
• ASTM E2174, Standard Practice for On-Site Inspection of Installed Firestop Systems — the inspection practice PFS applies to penetration firestop systems.
• ASTM E2393, Standard Practice for On-Site Inspection of Installed Fire Resistive Joint Systems and Perimeter Fire Barriers — the inspection practice PFS applies to joint systems and perimeter fire barriers.
• ASTM E3038, Standard Practice for Assessing and Qualifying Candidates as Inspectors of Firestop Systems and Fire-Resistive Joint Systems — the practice PFS's inspector competence records are assessed against.
• ISO/IEC 17020, Conformity assessment — Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection, and IAS AC291, Accreditation Criteria for Special Inspection Agencies — the requirements the PFS quality system is documented against.
• The National Building Code of Canada and the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, as they apply to fire separations and fire stops during design and construction.
• The National Fire Code of Canada and the National Fire Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, which require fire separations and fire protection materials to be maintained, repaired or replaced in service, and records retained for the authority having jurisdiction.

The ASTM inspection practices name the US test methods in their materials clauses. In Canada the code requires CAN/ULC-S115, so PFS applies the practices' inspection procedures to systems listed to S115, and records for each system type which listing standard the project actually relies on.
